A barista at Blue Bottle in Portland changed how I brew at home

I was ordering my usual pour over and this barista named Jen asked if I wanted to taste the difference between two roasts. She poured them side by side and pointed out how the lighter one had this bright citrus note. I had never really tasted those flavors before, just drank coffee to wake up. Now I actually pay attention to tasting notes and it completely changed my morning routine. Has anyone else had a coffee shop employee totally shift how you think about your brew?

The angle nobody is talking about is how that kind of interaction builds trust in a way that a bag of beans on a shelf just can't. Jen didn't just hand you coffee, she taught you how to listen to what you were drinking. That personal connection turns a routine purchase into a shared experience, and it makes customers loyal for life. Coffee shops that let their staff do this kind of thing are investing in their regulars, not just moving product. It is a smart business move disguised as a nice gesture.

Good baristas are worth their weight in gold. Jen sounds legit.

Wait, gold is literally worth like $2,000 an ounce right now?
