A guy at the cafe tried to convince me his instant coffee was better than my pour-over...

So I was at this little spot in Portland, just doing my usual morning pour-over with my own grinder and scale. This older guy at the next table leans over, points at my setup, and says, 'All that fuss for a cup of mud.' He then pulls a single-serve packet of instant coffee from his pocket, asks the barista for hot water, and makes it right there. He took a loud sip, looked me dead in the eye, and said, 'See? No bitterness. Costs about ten cents.' I was so stunned I didn't even know what to say... he just packed up his little packet and walked out like he'd won some grand debate. Has anyone else ever had someone try to defend instant coffee with that much... confidence?

Portland, of all places. He brought his own packet to a cafe that probably roasts its own beans. The confidence to stage that whole show over ten cent coffee is just wild to me.

My grandpa drank instant for 70 years and said the same thing.

That "costs about ten cents" line got me. My old neighbor used to say the same thing about his instant, right before he'd offer me a cup of brown water. It reminds me of what wendyking said about her grandpa. Some people just build their whole identity around saving a few pennies, even if it means drinking something that tastes like a wet paper bag. They get weirdly proud of it, like they cracked the code on life.
