A regular at my bar told me to stop weighing my beans, and I hate that he was right
So this guy Dave comes in every Tuesday, orders one whiskey neat, and we got to talking about coffee since he roasts his own in a popcorn popper out in his garage. I told him I've been weighing every single dose on a $20 scale for two years, chasing that perfect 18 gram shot, and he just laughed and said "you're weighing the beans but not tasting the cup." That stuck with me for some reason, so last weekend I measured once and then just eyeballed it the rest of the time, and honestly my morning cup tasted the same. Now I'm wondering if the scale has been more of a ritual than a tool this whole time. Has anyone else ditched the scale and regretted it, or did you actually go back?
The scale is a crutch for people who don't taste as they go. Dave's method works until it doesn't, like when you switch beans or your grinder burrs wear down. I kept the scale but stopped obsessing over the exact number, close enough is close enough most mornings.
