Milk texture debate got me second-guessing my whole routine

My barista buddy claimed I was over-frothing by 10 seconds and that microfoam should look like wet paint, not shaving cream. I've been steaming milk for 6 years and never once measured the time, just went by feel and sound. He timed me at 38 seconds and said I was turning it into soup, which honestly stung more than it should have. Now I'm stuck between sticking with my instinct method or trusting his stopwatch approach, and I keep overthinking every pour. Anyone else have a coffee habit that got wrecked after one comment from a friend?

Did you try just splitting the difference and seeing if it actually tastes different? I had a similar thing with my pour over after a buddy critiqued my grind size, so I ran his way for a week and then switched back. Turns out my gut method was fine, but timing it once or twice gave me a better baseline without changing the routine.
