My Chemex cracked right down the middle this morning
I was making my usual weekend pour over and right as I poured the hot water in, I heard this little *tink* sound. Next thing I know, there's a crack running from the top rim all the way to the bottom of the glass. I had it for about 3 years and I always hand washed it gently, so I'm not sure what went wrong. I ended up using a french press I had in the back of the cupboard out of desperation. Anybody know if the borosilicate glass ones are actually tougher or am I just looking for a different brewing method entirely?

Hey that really sucks. Same thing happened to my old Chemex a couple years back and it's so frustrating when you take good care of something and it still breaks. I switched to the borosilicate glass version after mine cracked and honestly it does feel like it holds up better with the temperature changes. I've dropped mine once or twice too and it didn't shatter like the original one might have. That said I still use my french press more often now just because it feels less fragile overall. But yeah pure sympathy here, losing a trusted brewer is a bummer.

Totally agree on the French press thing, it's like we all end up going back to the simpler stuff that just works. Seems like everything nice these days has that one weak spot you don't see until it's too late.

actually the borosilicate glass thing is a super common mix-up. most chemex (and a lot of other pour-overs) are made from borosilicate already, it's like the standard heat-resistant stuff. the crack was probably just a weak spot from manufacturing or a tiny chip you didn't notice. still sucks though, i feel your pain with losing a good brewer.
