My Chemex gave me the worst cup of my life after a 3-day camping trip
Left it in the car with old grounds still in it and the residual oils went rancid in 85 degree heat, so now I'm tasting smoky dirt through a clean filter and wondering if anyone else has ruined a brewer that way or if I should just soak it in vinegar overnight for a fresh start?

Cringe so hard reading this because I did the exact same thing with my French press last summer, left it in the back of my truck for a week with old sludge in it and it smelled like a wet ashtray mixed with burnt toast. Tried washing it with soap and hot water like five times but that ghost flavor just would not leave, so I feel your pain on the smoky dirt thing. Honestly, vinegar might not cut it if the oils really soaked into the glass, but it's worth a shot before you drop money on a new one. I ended up having to use baking soda and a serious scrub, then running a few cheap batches of coffee through it just to purge the taste, and even now I swear I get a hint of campfire regret sometimes. Worst part is you probably miss the fun of making coffee in the woods and now every cup reminds you of your own lazy cleanup mistake, which is basically me every morning.
