My French press carafe shattered mid-brew in Baltimore

I had the same brand of Bodum carafe for 5 years, never had an issue. Last Tuesday I went to push the plunger down and the glass just cracked straight down the side, hot coffee went everywhere over my counter and my notes for a job estimate. Turns out the glass had micro stress fractures from cooling too fast after I rinsed it with cold tap water once. I work outside and bring it with me on site, so I ordered a stainless steel travel press instead. Has anyone else had a glass carafe fail after years of daily use, or did I just get unlucky?

Did you rinse that hot glass with cold water every time, or just once?

Honestly, I think rinsing just once is all you need. If you keep dumping cold water on it, you're just wasting time and water for zero extra benefit. The first rinse is what does the shocking, anything after that is just habit. Plus, running it under cold water over and over can make the glass more likely to crack from the temp swing if it's still super hot in the middle. I mean, maybe it's just me, but I've never had a jar break from one quick rinse. Idk, seems like overthinking a simple step.
