Pro tip: weighing beans right after the roast date printed on the bag changed my whole morning cup
I kept getting sour, thin cups from a local roaster here in Portland even though I was using the same ratio and grind I always use. Last week I finally checked the roast date instead of the best by date and realized the bag was 9 days old, so I switched to a bag that was 3 days off the roast and the same recipe suddenly tasted sweet and full. Does anyone else plan their buying around the roast date, or am I late to this?
Been roasting my own beans for a couple years now and I still grabbed a bag off the shelf last month without checking anything, got it home, and it tasted like cardboard water. My own fault too, the date was right there staring at me. Roast date really does matter way more than people give it credit for, those first 4 to 10 days after roast are kind of the sweet spot for most beans. Past two weeks things start tasting flat no matter what you do with your grinder or your ratio. Good on you for figuring it out, better late than never I guess.
