Spent $60 on a fancy coffee bean subscription and got burned

I signed up for a monthly subscription that promised rare single-origin beans from small farms. First bag was okay, but the second one arrived stale and tasted like cardboard. Anyone else have bad luck with those curated coffee clubs?

Have you tried reaching out to their customer service? I had a similar thing happen with a different subscription, some place called Bean Voyage or something like that, and they actually sent me a replacement bag after I complained. The replacement was still pretty meh though, not gonna lie. I think the problem is those small farms can't always control how long the beans sit in a warehouse before shipping. Ended up just going back to my local roaster where I can smell the beans before I buy them, way less hassle.

Wait, they actually sent you a replacement that was still bad? That's wild. You'd think they'd at least taste test the second batch before shipping it out. Totally agree on smelling beans before buying though, that's the only way to know what you're getting.

Yeah that replacement being just as bad is rough. I get that small farms might have storage issues but the whole point of a subscription is consistency right? Like you're paying extra for them to curate and quality check before it even ships. Did you bother asking them what their roasting date was on those bags? I feel like half these clubs just drop ship whatever they have sitting around instead of actually roasting to order. That would tell you a lot about whether they're actually paying attention or just taking your money.
