Bought a run of Claremont X-Men over Miller Daredevil at a garage sale
Last Saturday I found a box of old comics for $50 at a flea market in Portland. I had to pick between a nearly complete Claremont run on Uncanny X-Men (issues 140-200) or a set of Frank Miller Daredevils (158-180). I went with the X-Men because I love the Dark Phoenix saga, and it turned out three of the issues were first prints. Has anyone else had to make a tough call like that at a sale?

Three first prints in that run is just wild, man, seriously. I'm sitting here trying to do the math on how much you saved versus what a shop would ask for a first print Dark Phoenix alone. You basically pulled the same kind of score as the_jason but on a bigger scale. I gotta ask, was there a specific issue in there that made your jaw drop when you flipped to the inside cover?

You know what actually got me? It wasn't even one of the big keys. There was this beat-up issue 94 in the middle of the pile, first appearance of the new X-Men. The cover was wrecked, tape on the spine, someone wrote their name on it in marker. But the inside was clean. No rips, no stains. I spent like ten minutes just staring at that first page where Cyclops is standing in the rain. That's when I knew the whole lot was legit. Everything else after that just felt like gravy.

I grabbed a first print Dark Phoenix for $3 at a thrift store once, felt like winning the lottery.
