Found out my old comic shop had a dumpster day in 1982, ouch

I was reading a local history blog about my hometown in Ohio and stumbled on a mention that Cappy's Comics threw out 14 long boxes of unsold 70s stuff behind the store back in '82. Some kid apparently pulled out a mint Giant-Size X-Men #1 from that trash and sold it for $200 at a flea market a week later. Anyone else ever heard of shops tossing inventory like that, or is this a one-off horror story?

Nah, that story sounds like urban legend bait, most shops back then just dumped damaged stock, not sealed gems.

Worked at a shop in the 90s where the owner tossed a few long boxes of old westerns and romance comics when he moved locations. He left them by the curb and told us kids to grab what we wanted. I snagged a near-mint run of Secret Six, paid three bucks for the whole box at a yard sale later. Shops did that more than people think, but usually it was the stuff that just sat for years, not the hot books.
