Gatekeeping at my local shop made me feel like a tourist
Last Friday at Bedrock Comics in Phoenix, this guy behind me in line heard me ask about the new Ultimate Spider-Man run and laughed, saying I was late to the party and should stick to the movies. He then spent 5 minutes explaining why the 90s clone saga was the only real era worth reading, while I just wanted a single issue to kill time on my lunch break. Why do some fans act like knowing a back issue's page count makes them the mayor of nerd town?

Honestly the dude had a point. If youre gonna walk into a comic shop asking about something everyone's been talking about for months you gotta expect some ribbing. It's like walking into a bar and asking what beer is.

The bar comparison is spot on, but honestly I'd be the guy who walks in asking what beer is and then admits I only drink the clear stuff. At least the comic shop guy probably didn't have to watch me struggle with a tap handle.
