Picked the 90s X-Men omnibus over the Claremont run at my local shop and finally got to read the full Age of Apocalypse
I chose the thicker book with the shiny cover instead of the older collection and ended up loving the weird alternate universe stories more than I expected, anyone else prefer those big crossover events over the classic arcs?

Swap covers all the time at my shop when I see a shiny new book sitting next to a plain one. You made the right call honestly, those big crossover reads are way more fun when you just want a wild ride through the X-Men multiverse.

actually that's not quite a multiverse thing with the recent X-Men crossover books. Most of those big event comics are set in the same main universe, just with different timelines or alternate realities tied to the plot. The Age of Apocalypse stuff and House of M were more like what you're describing. But yeah, swapping covers is the move anyway. I do it too when the variant art is way better than the standard release. The whole point is to get the story you want with the cover you actually like.
