That $80 variant cover that wasn't worth the paper it's printed on

I dropped 80 bucks on a first printing variant of a hot indie book last year, thinking it would at least hold value or look cool framed. The cover art was great online, but in person the colors were muddy and the spine had a crease right out of the bag. Has anyone else gambled on a pricey variant and regretted it right away?

Ate that 80 bucks and learned a hard lesson. The paper quality on some of these "premium" variants is honestly worse than a standard $4.99 issue you'd grab off the shelf. The colors on mine were flat and almost looked like a bad photocopy compared to the online mockup. Then you factor in the gamble of shipping damage, and suddenly that "collector's item" is just a reminder of bad choices. Sticking to the regular covers or digital codes from now on, my wallet can't handle that kind of disappointment again.

Yeah I used to be all about those fancy variants, thought they were the future or whatever. But after seeing a couple in person that looked like damp napkins compared to the promo pics, I totally get it now. Sticking with the basic issues feels way smarter honestly.
