TIL comic book fans treat back issues like stock investments

Last week at a shop in Phoenix, this guy spent 15 minutes arguing with the clerk over a $3 price difference on a 1993 X-Men issue. It hit me that some fans aren't just collectors, they're basically day traders with polybags.

Spent ten minutes watching a guy at my local shop literally argue that a 1995 Spider-Man issue with a CRIMPED corner was "more valuable" than a mint one because it showed "manufacturing character." These people treat their longboxes like they're trading stocks on Wall Street. Pure speculation on colored paper with staples.

Used to roll my eyes at people who called comic collecting "investing" but then I watched a dude at a con pull out a spreadsheet on his phone to track his Amazing Spider-Man #300 values over 5 years. Totally changed my mind. Next thing you know he's explaining grade bumps like he's analyzing quarterly earnings. These guys have charts and everything now.
