TIL some collectors store comics in pizza boxes for protection

I was at a con in Portland last weekend and a guy showed me his graded comics packed in clean pizza boxes. He said it saves money on expensive bags. Has anyone else seen this storage hack work out?

Clean pizza boxes" for graded comics? That's just asking for grease stains and pizza smell to ruin your collection forever. I'd rather pay for proper bags than risk that disaster.

I stored about 50 comics in pizza boxes during a move last year and they held up fine with no smell issues, just had to make sure they were bone dry first.

Whoa hold up, did you actually check for grease after you pulled them out? @dianas50 has a point about pizza boxes being sketchy but I'm curious how clean yours stayed. I tried storing some old issues in a cardboard box from my kitchen once and the faint tomato sauce smell never fully went away. Did you put anything between the comics and the cardboard or just stack them raw? Also were these like classic plain boxes or did they have grease spots from the start? I've always heard pizza boxes are bad news for long term storage but if you found a way to make it work I'd love to hear the details.
