Why does nobody talk about people who call every indie comic a 'graphic novel'?
I was at my local shop in Denver last weekend and this guy kept pointing at issues from a $3 bin calling them graphic novels. I mean, a 22-page pamphlet with staples is not the same as a bound book that tells a complete story. It bugs me when fans mix up format and quality. Does anyone else have a pet peeve about comic terms getting used wrong?

People get way too precious about comic book labels.

Honestly I gotta push back on this a little. My buddy Steve who owns a shop in Arvada explained to me that "graphic novel" has been used as a general term for any long comic story since the 70s, not just bound books. You're right that a 22-page pamphlet from a $3 bin is different than a hardcover, but the guy might just be using the word the way publishers do. Marvel and DC literally call their collected editions graphic novels even when they were originally single issues. I get that it's annoying when someone calls a floppy a graphic novel, but language changes and people just want to sound like they know what they're talking about. Maybe cut the guy some slack and save the frustration for people who call all comics "funny books" or something.
