A chat with a retired diver in Seattle changed how I see decompression

I was grabbing coffee before a job in Seattle and got talking to an old guy who used to dive in the 80s. He told me, "We used to come up way too fast sometimes, and we all paid for it later." He described his own knee pain and hearing loss in detail. It made me realize I've been rushing my own ascents lately to finish jobs quicker. Has anyone else had a talk that made them slow down and stick to the tables more strictly?

Used to think the tables were for overly cautious people. Hearing a guy describe his constant ringing ears from the bends changed that. Now I watch my ascent rate like a hawk.

Guess it takes a guy's ears ringing forever to make some people follow basic safety rules. I mean, the tables are there for a reason, right?

Those tables are basically your future health insurance.
