Three dives in a row I had a guy in Rhode Island flip out on me for the same thing. It's like people forget that little stuff adds up to big problems underwater, but they'll leave a grocery cart in the middle of a parking spot without a second thought.

Did you leave his valve open the whole dive? Because that would explain the anger. Norfolk divers don't mess around with that stuff.
