TIL the average commercial diver's career is only about 7 years, not the 20 I always thought. Read it in a union safety report from last quarter.

The Navy's dive school in Panama City taught us to log every ache and joint issue right away. That paper trail is the only thing that gets you proper medical coverage later on. Without it, you're just telling stories.

Smart move keeping that paper trail. My own medical records are a mess of half-remembered back twinges I should have written down. @xena277's uncle is right about that wear and tear, it sneaks up on you. Makes me glad my worst job hazard is a splinter, not the bends. Bet those divers have stories that make my work look like a picnic.

That 7 year number is crazy but it makes sense. My uncle did underwater welding for a few years and the stories he told were wild. He said the cold and the pressure just wear your body down like you wouldn't believe. Makes you wonder how they even set safety rules for a job like that.
