Vent: My crew thinks I'm nuts for ditching the dive computer on routine jobs
I know everyone swears by dive computers for tracking time and depth, but on simple hull cleans or shallow inspections, I stick to my watch and tables. Last week, we were scrubbing a boat at 40 feet and my computer froze up, so I just followed my planned schedule from the paper charts. We got done on time with no issues, and I didn't waste minutes fiddling with buttons. Maybe it's just me, but relying too much on gadgets can make you forget how to plan a dive the old way. For complex stuff, sure, use the tech, but for the everyday jobs, keeping it simple works better. I've seen guys get stuck when their screen glitches, but with a good plan in your head, you always know where you stand.

Seriously? That's like saying you don't need a seatbelt because you're just driving to the store. A dive computer does way more than just track time, it's constantly watching your real nitrogen levels and adjusting for every little move you make. Tables can't do that, they're just a rough guess for a perfect dive. Your watch won't scream at you if you accidentally go too deep or stay too long. One mistake on your math or one forgotten detail and you're in real trouble, gadgets or not. It's not about forgetting the old ways, it's about using the best tool to stay alive.

Used to mock tables until my computer died at 40 feet too.

Remember my friend who laughed at tables until his PC died in a fall?
