Lost $40 on a refurbished power supply that fried my motherboard

I bought a refurbished 750W power supply off eBay to save some cash for a client build. It worked for two days then popped and took the motherboard with it. Has anyone else had bad luck with refurbished PSUs or was this just a fluke?

Oh man that's brutal. I had a similar thing happen with a refurbished 650W unit from a big brand name. Lasted about a week and then just died no pop or anything but it took my old SSD with it. I feel your pain $40 is a lot to lose but frying a motherboard on top of that is just salt in the wound.

Yeah I used to be the kind of person who'd grab the cheapest PSU I could find, but @the_wren seeing stuff like this and reading about what happened to you changed my mind. Now I just save up for something reliable.

Learned that lesson the hard way too, only my fried PSU smelled like burnt toast for a week.
