Mid-block party, a neighbor shoved a laundry-ravaged USB drive at me

So I'm at our block party (just grabbing some chips) when a neighbor slides a USB drive across the table. It's all melted and fuzzy from a laundry mishap. He really wants me to get his family photos back, so I end up explaining data storage while folks are dancing nearby. Pretty weird situation, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Wow, that reminds me of the time my neighbor asked me to fix her laptop during a blackout. She just brought the whole thing over, cord dragging, and was shocked my internet was out too. I had to explain how power works while her cat knocked over a plant. People get really brave with tech favors at the worst times.

Tried to salvage a soaked hard drive for a buddy once. Left it in a bag of rice for a week before plugging it in, and it actually read most of the files. You'd be surprised what a slow dry and a direct connection can do.
