Old timer told me to cap unused NIC ports with tape, now I see why
A retired network engineer I met at a Micro Center in Portland said to put electrical tape over any ethernet ports I'm not using on patch panels. I thought he was being paranoid until I pulled a plate off last week and found dust bunnies corroding two pins on a port. Has anyone else dealt with dirty ports from leaving them uncapped?

Huh, I mean I guess it can happen but honestly I've seen way worse inside people's walls than a little dust on a port. Unless you live in a construction zone or something I feel like this is one of those things that sounds smart but realistically won't matter for most of us.

Right? Nothing worse than pulling a plate off and finding that. It's one of those things that seems silly until you see it for yourself.
