Showerthought: I cleaned thermal paste with alcohol swaps for 2 years before a client's dog taught me a lesson
So I'm at this guy's house in Phoenix fixing a laptop that kept shutting down, and I had my whole routine going, pulling the heatsink, wiping the old paste with 91% isopropyl and a cotton swab like I always did. The guy's golden retriever knocks over my open bottle of alcohol and it spills all over my bag, and while I'm scrambling I notice my swab leaving little cotton fibers all over the CPU die. I'd been doing this for like 2 years and never once thought about the lint. Next day I grabbed a $4 pack of coffee filters from the grocery store and tried those instead, and the die came out spotless in one pass. Now I keep a stack in my kit and I cringe thinking about all the lint I probably baked into chips before this. Anyone else switch to filters or lint-free wipes, or am I late to this party?
