That guy at Micro Center said thermal paste is overrated, is he nuts?

Stopped by Micro Center in Denver last Saturday to grab a new cooler for my aging build. While I was at the counter, this older tech was telling a customer that a pea-sized drop is all you need and that spreading it with a card is pointless. I've been doing the credit card spread method for like 8 years because I thought it gave better coverage. He said it can trap air bubbles and actually hurt temps on modern chips. That made me think, have any of you switched from spreading to the pea method and seen a real difference in your core temps?

Hold on before you ditch your method. I've built systems for over a decade and spreading paste thin with a card works fine if you do it right. The key is using just enough to cover the whole IHS without it oozing over the edges. That pea drop method works best for the big round heat spreaders on newer CPUs, but on older chips with smaller dies it can leave dry spots on the corners. Air bubbles are a real thing but only if you smear it on thick like butter. I've pulled plenty of coolers off after years of service and the spread method gave full, even coverage every time. If your temps are good with your current setup, don't fix what isn't broken just because one guy at the store has a strong opinion.
