TIL that cheap thermal paste is actually fine for most builds

I used to swear by Arctic Silver for every single job, you know, the expensive stuff. Then last month I built a budget rig for a client using a $5 tube of some no-name brand from Amazon. After 3 weeks of gaming, the temps were within 2 degrees of what I get with the premium paste. Has anyone else tested this and seen the same thing?

Right? It's like we've all been brainwashed by the marketing guys. I used to think cheap paste was basically just grey Play-Doh, but then I threw some on a Ryzen 5 and it ran totally fine for months. My buddy still insists on using liquid metal for everything, and I just laugh at him while he's repasting his GPU for the third time this year. Money well spent, I guess!

Hold on, is your buddy really doing liquid metal on a GPU? That seems like a lot of risk for maybe a couple degrees. I get that the fancy stuff works better under heavy loads, but for most of us who just game or browse, the cheap tube is totally fine. I think the whole "brainwashed" thing is a bit much though, some people just like the peace of mind knowing they got the best possible temps. It's more about being careful than about wasting money, you know?

brainwashed by the marketing guys" is a pretty wild take, @valw36. I actually think most of us who use the premium stuff are just being safe, not stupid. Cheap paste might hit 2 degrees off at idle, but under a heavy load like a 4k render or a long gaming session, that gap can get way bigger. I've seen cheap paste dry out and crack in under a year on some builds, while my Arctic Silver is still going strong after three. So yeah, maybe the brand name markup is real, but peace of mind and longevity are worth something too. Not everyone wants to repaste their rig every six months.
