Took me 5 years to realize I was thermal pasting wrong

Honestly, I always put a pea-sized dab in the center and called it good. But last week I pulled a CPU I'd installed 2 years ago and noticed the paste only spread over half the IHS. The corners were bone dry. That's when I checked a thermal camera from my buddy's shop and saw a 12 degree delta between center and edge. Ngl, I switched to spreading it thin with a credit card and my temps dropped 8c under load. Anyone else find out their paste method was trash the hard way?

Buddy of mine spent ten years putting paste on like he was buttering toast, thick and sloppy right in the middle. He finally swapped to a thin X pattern after I showed him a video and his CPU stopped hitting 95c under load.

Piled mine on like I was frosting a cake for years. Thought more paste meant better coverage, just smeared it thick right over the center. Friend finally made me watch a teardown video where the guy used a line across the IHS. Swapped to that method and my idle temps dropped by 10 degrees easy. Felt like a total amateur for all that wasted time and thermal throttling I probably caused.
