Drove past that new parking garage on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie and the slab edges are already spalling
Went up to Poughkeepsie last Tuesday to look at a basement job for my cousin, and on the way in I passed that new parking structure they finished maybe 18 months ago. The slab edges on the upper deck are already popping and spalling, you can see the aggregate showing through in maybe a dozen spots, and there is rust staining running down the face of the wall below like the rebar is too close to the surface. I stopped and walked it for five minutes because I could not help myself, and the finish on the columns is wavey as hell too, looks like they pulled the forms way too early. I have poured plenty of decks that are 20 years old with less wear than this thing at a year and a half. My guess is they poured it in the middle of July with no curing compound and nobody babysat the mix when the driver added water at the chute. What gets me is this was a big public job, so somebody signed off on all of it. Anybody else seeing newer commercial pours go bad this fast, or am I just getting old and cranky?
Ran into the same thing on a school job in Kingston a few years back, and what saved us was demanding the batch tickets and slump logs before we'd sign off on the next phase. Once the inspector saw the water added at the chute, they made them core the slabs and half of it got torn out.
