That pour last June at the new fire station in Peoria taught me a hard lesson about rebar placement
I skimped on tying the mesh tight and ended up with a cracked slab right by the bay door. Anyone else ever rush the prep work and regret it later?

That six inch gap you mentioned between the mat and the edge form. Was that your doing or the crew's call? I've seen guys leave that space to save time on cutting and bending, but it always comes back to bite you when the heavy trucks start rolling over it. My last job we had a 4 inch drop at the control joint because the guy tying the chairs skipped every other one. Ended up with a spider crack running three feet from the corner of the bay door. Foreman said it was fine, but the owner made us cut it out and repour in July heat. Took two extra days and ate our profit.

That gap thing, I usually see it more as a crew call when they're trying to move fast. Skipping chairs is a whole different level of risky though, that's just asking for trouble later on.
