My cousin posted a flat earth video in the family group chat and Thanksgiving got weird
So last Saturday I'm sitting at my aunt's place in Tulsa, just eating pie, when my cousin pulls up a 2 hour video on his phone about how planes don't fly over Antarctica. I tried to point out that my buddy flew to Chile last March and tracked the whole thing, but he just said the map on the seatback screen was faked. We went back and forth for maybe 20 minutes while the rest of the family stared at their plates. Has anyone actually gotten through to a family member like this, or do you just let it ride and pass the potatoes?
My own brother tried to tell me the moon landing was shot in a basement and I just sat there nodding like a bobblehead because I didn't want to fight over green bean casserole. Looking back, maybe staying quiet was the move, since nobody wins an argument where the other person thinks every piece of proof is fake. The trick is you can't debate someone out of a belief they didn't reason themselves into, and a 2 hour video at Thanksgiving is not the time or place. Next year just say "huh, interesting" and slide the pie toward him, because keeping the peace is worth way more than being right. If he really wants to dig in, let him research it on his own time when he's not holding the whole table hostage. Pass the potatoes and save your energy for the people who actually want to talk.
