My cousin swears the moon landing was faked, and our Thanksgiving argument in Ohio got way out of hand
Last Thanksgiving at my aunt's place in Dayton, my cousin Jake pulled up a 45 minute YouTube video at the dinner table claiming the moon landing was shot in a studio, and I made the mistake of laughing at him. He got real loud and said the flag waving proves it, so I grabbed my phone and showed him the NASA explainer about the rod and the inertia. My uncle Ron told us both to shut up before dessert, and Jake didn't talk to me for 3 weeks. Now I'm wondering if I was wrong to bring receipts at a family dinner, or if you should always push back on stuff like that. How do you all handle conspiracy talk with relatives without turning it into a fight?
I read somewhere that arguing with facts actually makes people dig in harder, it's called the backfire effect (weird name, I know). Maybe just asking him questions instead of dropping links would work better next time.
