The "Follow the Money" line is lazy and people use it to skip every hard question
Every time a big story breaks, someone in the replies types "just follow the money" like it's a magic spell that solves the case. I used to nod along too until last fall when my buddy in Toledo spent two weekends building a whole chart on some defense contract thing and every single link in his chain was just a guy guessing on a podcast. Here's the part people miss: "follow the money" only works if you can actually trace it, and 95 percent of the time you can't, you just end up at some shell company in Delaware that's a dead end for a regular person. The lazier version of this is the "cui bono" move, where you just name whoever got richer and call it proof, but tons of people get richer off a disaster without causing it. I keep seeing this same shortcut jammed into debates about tech layoffs and plane stuff and local zoning fights, and it kills the thread because nobody has to bring a real source anymore. If the money trail is your whole case, then show the paperwork or admit you're going off vibes. What's the last "follow the money" claim you actually traced to a real document, and how far did you get before it went cold?
Man, I used to eat up every "follow the money" comment like it was gospel, but then my cousin tried doing it on a hospital buyout and got stuck at a PO box. The whole thing fell apart because the actual records were sealed and he was just connecting dots that felt right. Now when I see that line I want to ask for the receipt or the filing, not a hunch dressed up as detective work.
