Vent: That 'secure' building hack I fell for in downtown Portland last month
Last month I was walking near Pioneer Square in Portland when this guy in a reflective vest told me the building I was in had a 'gas leak' and I had to leave immediately with my stuff. He pointed to a side door and said it was the only safe exit. I walked out that door and realized he was just a distraction for some crew who stole three laptops from the office above. Has anyone else seen this fake security person trick used for break-ins?

That reflective vest trick is a clever one. Were the three laptops just sitting out in the open, or do you think the thief had someone watching the building beforehand to know exactly where the office was and when people would be gone?

Could it have been someone who worked there before or had a grudge? I've heard of ex-employees still having keys or knowing the layout well enough to pull something like this. A friend of mine had a break-in at his workshop a few years back, turned out it was a former contractor who knew exactly where the spare cash was kept and when the place would be empty. Might not apply here, but worth considering alongside the watching the building idea.
