Bought a $40 laser level thinking it was a toy, turns out it saved my whole tile job in Fresno
I grabbed one of those cheap green cross line lasers off a whim last month for a bathroom floor in Fresno, mostly because my old bubble level kept falling off the wall. I figured it would be a gimmick, but I set it up on a coffee can and that line landed dead flat across 11 feet of backer board. My helper laughed at me, then spent the next two hours lining up every tile against it without a single shim. Only catch is the thing eats AA batteries like candy and the tripod threads are plastic, so it wobbles if you bump the bench. Anyone found a budget laser that holds a line without re-leveling itself every 20 minutes?
Calling it "dead flat across 11 feet of backer board" from a coffee can setup sounds more like luck than a real tool, because a cheap laser on an uneven can is going to drift the second anything touches it. A bubble level that falls off the wall is still telling you the truth, while a laser that re-levels itself every 20 minutes is just a light show.
