Heard a PM in Dallas say he won't trust any GC that still does takeoffs by hand, so is digital takeoff always better or does it just feel that way?
This guy swore his last three jobs came in 15% under budget with software, but my old super did hand takeoffs for 20 years and never missed a major item, so where do you all land on speed versus gut feel?
My uncle ran a small excavation crew for years and he still sketches his dirt cuts on the back of a napkin before touching a machine. Drove his son (who runs the office and loves his software) absolutely nuts. The funny part is they both end up with the same numbers like 9 times out of 10. What the software caught that the napkin didn't was one weird lot with a retaining wall nobody priced, so the kid got to say told you so at Thanksgiving. Still, the old guy's gut knew the dirt was garbage before any screen told him. So maybe it's less hand versus digital and more who's actually reading the numbers at the end.
