I thought digital takeoff was overhyped until I saw what it did to our bid on a 14,000 sq ft job
For two years I rolled my eyes at every rep who told me paper plans were slowing us down. Then we lost a school gymnasium bid in Fort Worth by $6,800, and the estimator pulled our takeoff sheet and showed me I'd missed 11 door frames because two plan sheets printed at different scales. We switched to a takeoff tool in February and our last three bids came in within $900 of the winner instead of thousands off. Turns out my "experience" was mostly just me being good at guessing. Has anyone else gone back and rechecked old lost bids after switching? I'm curious how far off most of them really were.
Rechecked a few of ours last year and yeah, most were off by way more than I wanted to admit. One warehouse bid we lost by $12k and I found like 40 linear feet of wall I just flat out missed on a blurry sheet. That one still bugs me.
