A guy at a gas station in Tulsa told me to stop arguing with my brother about politics, and he was dead right
Last month my brother and I got into it over some dumb political thing at a family cookout in Tulsa, and it turned into a two hour fight that ruined the whole day. On the drive home I stopped for gas and the guy at the next pump, probably in his 60s, heard me venting on the phone and said "you can be right or you can have a brother, pick one." I thought it was cheesy at the time, but I tried it the next time we talked and just let a comment slide instead of firing back. We ended up talking for an hour about his truck rebuild instead of screaming at each other. Has anyone else had a total stranger hand them advice that actually stuck?
Went through something really similar with my dad a couple years back, we almost stopped talking over some stupid argument about some bill or whatever. It got so bad my mom was crying at Thanksgiving and nobody would even pass the potatoes. Hearing that your brother opened up about his truck rebuild after you just let one comment go honestly made me smile, cause that stuff matters way more than winning some dumb debate. That gas station guy was onto something real, and it is crazy how the best advice sometimes comes from a total stranger who has no reason to care. Glad you two are good now.
