DAE think "thank you for your service" has become totally meaningless? Got called out for not saying it to a guy in a Marine Corps hat at Target last month
So last month I'm at the Target on Slauson in LA, just grabbing some detergent, and this older guy in a Marine Corps hat is ahead of me in line. The cashier, probably 19 or 20, finishes ringing him up and goes "thank you for your service." The guy just nods and walks off. And I didn't say anything. I didn't even think about it. Then the cashier looks at me and goes "you know, you should say that to vets, it means a lot." And I'm standing there like, lady, he's buying dish soap. I actually agreed with the guy at a bar in Anaheim 6 months ago who told me he wishes people would stop saying it because half the time they just say it to feel good about themselves and don't actually care. I know that sounds harsh but I saw it happen 3 times that same week, once at a gas station and twice at the airport. It feels like a script now, like "how are you" where nobody actually wants an answer. I'm not saying don't respect vets, I'm saying a canned line at a checkout counter is not respect. Does anyone else feel weird about this or am I the only one who thinks it's gotten hollow?
