I think the whole 'cancel culture' thing is mostly just people facing real consequences for the first time.

When my cousin got fired from his marketing job in Phoenix for a racist joke he posted online six years ago, he cried about being 'cancelled' instead of admitting he was just finally being held accountable for his own words. Has anyone else seen someone react this way when they finally get called out?

Sounds like your cousin discovered the long-term storage feature on the internet. Funny how that works, right? Post something dumb and forget about it, but the internet never does. It's not being cancelled, it's just your past catching up to you at full speed. Maybe the real consequence is learning that actions, even digital ones, can stick around and bite you later.

Exactly, @black.joel. It's less about being canceled and more about finally getting the bill for all the free stuff you posted years ago.
