My neighbor's lawn sign on Maple Street got me thinking about civic duty
Three weeks ago I saw a handwritten sign about the zoning vote while walking my dog, and it hit me that nobody I know actually reads the city agenda before showing up to those meetings.

Funny you mention that, last month I showed up to a city meeting about the park benches and realized half the people there were just there for the free coffee. My neighbor Karen spent the whole time reading her phone and only looked up to nod when someone said "budget." Made me wonder if any of us actually know what we're voting on or if we're just showing up to be seen.

The trick is to actually read the agenda before you walk in. I started doing that a few years back after realizing I was nodding along to stuff I didn't understand either. You can usually find it online a week ahead, and it takes maybe ten minutes to skim. Also, they post the minutes from the last meeting, so you can catch up on what you missed. @michaelchen, your Karen sounds like half the people at any meeting, honestly, but at least she showed up. The real problem is the ones who don't come at all and then complain about the decisions later. Show up, ask one dumb question if you have to, that's more than most folks do.
