Rant: my dad told me to stop being nice to telemarketers

He said they're not trying to chat, they're trying to sell. I spent 7 minutes on the phone with a guy named Mike last Tuesday asking about his dog. Felt like a sucker after.

My friend Jenna once spent 10 minutes talking recipes with a vacuum salesman, totally fell for it.

and honestly the whole thing is a trap because they're trained to be nice back. Mike probably had a script for the small talk too, like asking about pets is literally page one of their training manual. The real kicker is your dad's right but it also feels wrong to just hang up on someone. Like I get they're working but they're still people at the end of the day. The way I see it now is if I got time to chat I'll chat but I'm not buying anything, so maybe you're not a sucker, you just gave Mike a better afternoon than he probably had. That said, next time they ask about my dog I'm saying he's dead just to end the call faster.
