That 'harmless' group chat joke cost me my closest friend in one night

Tbh I thought I knew my friend group inside out, but last Tuesday at a bar in Portland I made a sarcastic comment about someone's new relationship and the silence was deafening. Within an hour, the group chat I'd been in for 5 years had me removed, no warning, no chance to explain. I tried calling twice and got voicemail both times, then saw a screenshot where they'd called me 'toxic' without even asking my side. Has anyone else had a single offhand remark completely blow up a friendship, or was I just the last to know I was the problem?

Getting the boot without even a chance to explain is brutal. That screenshot thing would sting extra hard, like they were already looking for a reason.
