Update: I thought the whole 'no soap for cast iron' thing was just hype
For years I washed my skillet with Dawn after every use, convinced the seasoning would be fine. Then a friend in Charleston showed me her 50 year old pan, cleaned only with hot water and a brush, and the surface was like black glass. I switched six months ago and the non-stick quality is honestly better now. Anyone else make a switch that went against common kitchen advice?

Wait, you used Dawn for years and it didn't strip the seasoning?

Actually, soap is fine for modern cast iron.

Yeah my buddy was so scared to use soap on his grandma's old skillet, thought he'd ruin it. He finally tried a drop of regular dish soap last year and nothing bad happened, the pan was totally fine. He said it was a game changer for getting rid of that old grease smell. It's one of those kitchen myths that just won't die.
