Warning: my neighbor said all modern art is just a scam for rich people.

We were talking by the mailboxes last Tuesday and he pointed at my abstract print and said, 'They just throw paint and call it genius to trick you.' It was a cheap print from a college fair, but his take felt so sure and angry. Has anyone had a friend say something that just made you stop and think?

Yeah, "value to you" is the key part like lilys82 said. My neighbor's take is so focused on money and scams that it misses why people even have art on their walls in the first place. It's not an investment, it's just a thing that makes you feel something when you walk past it. Getting that angry about a cheap print feels like he's just looking for a reason to be mad about something.

Your neighbor is mad about a cheap print? Mine spent over two hundred dollars on a velvet painting of dogs playing poker. Framed and everything. He loves it. If it makes you smile, who cares what it cost. The whole point is on the wall, not in a bank.

Trick you" is a strong way to put it. That cheap print you liked still has value to you, which is the point.
