Baking soda volcano cupcakes that exploded in my oven

I tried making those lava filled cupcakes from a TikTok recipe last Saturday and put way too much baking soda in the batter. Three of them burst open and spilled all over the bottom of my oven at 350 degrees. The smoke alarm went off for 20 minutes and now my kitchen smells like a science fair project. Has anyone else had a baking soda measurement go wrong like this?

Honestly I feel like people overreact to kitchen disasters lol, its just some burnt batter and a little smoke. Yeah it probably stinks but airing the place out for an hour and wiping the oven down should fix it. If the kitchen smells like baking soda after that just make some toast or bacon to cover it up.

12 cupcakes exploding is rookie numbers compared to what happened to my buddy Kevin when he tried that baking soda DIY volcano science project from a kids book. He used like half a cup for a single cupcake and it blew the wrapper right off in the microwave. The whole kitchen looked like a flour bomb went off. I remember reading somewhere that baking soda to flour ratio in a batter should never go over a teaspoon per cup or it gets super unstable. Sounds like you pulled a Kevin with that TikTok recipe, just less foam and more smoke.
