My mom saw me deglaze a pan with wine and said I was 'showing off'
She stood there with her arms crossed while I was making a simple pan sauce and told me real cooks don't need fancy techniques like that. Has anyone else had a family member act like basic cooking skills are somehow pretentious?

Feel you on this, it sucks when family makes you feel bad for just trying to learn something new.

Honestly, the part where your mom said "real cooks don't need fancy techniques like that" really gets me. That whole "real cooks" thing is just gatekeeping, plain and simple. Deglazing isn't some show-off trick, it's literally just using liquid to get the stuck-on flavor off the bottom of the pan. That's the oldest cooking trick in the book, people have been doing it for centuries without wine even.
Ngl, it sounds like she might feel threatened or defensive about her own cooking style. A lot of older folks grew up thinking cooking was just about getting food on the table, not about technique or flavor. So when they see someone doing something they don't recognize, it feels like a put-down even if it's not. Maybe she just needs to see you're not trying to be better than her, you're just trying to make a good sauce.
