My mom told me I was overmixing muffin batter after a dozen hockey pucks

She saw me beating the flour into submission and said "stop when you still see streaks, you're making bread." Has anyone else gotten a simple piece of advice that completely fixed a recurring fail?

My gran taught me the same trick with pancake batter, @brian_ramirez. She'd yell "lumps are your friends" from the kitchen doorway (she had this weird thing about me using a whisk instead of a fork). Turns out she was right, because even a few leftover clumps keep things tender instead of turning into rubber hockey pucks. Still can't believe I wasted a whole bag of flour before I listened to her.
