Twenty years of flipping pancakes and I had the heat wrong the whole time

Last Sunday I'm making breakfast for my kid's soccer team, like 14 people, and I'm on my third batch of pancakes. Every single one comes out dark on the outside, raw in the middle. My buddy Dave watches me for a minute and just says, 'you know medium heat isn't a suggestion, right?' I always cranked the burner to high because I thought it cooked faster. Turns out I've been doing that since I was 18 and first learned to cook. The outside burns before the inside sets, every time, no matter what I did with the batter. I dropped the heat to medium, waited longer, and the next batch came out golden and fluffy. So now I gotta ask, how many of you also learned a basic cooking thing embarrassingly late in life?
