Old neighbor taught me the egg trick 12 years ago and I still use it

My neighbor Mrs. Garcia caught me throwing out a half loaf of stale bread back in 2012. She said "don't waste that, just wet it and crack an egg on it" and walked me through making a pan of savory bread pudding right there in her kitchen. All I had was that bread, two eggs, and some shredded cheddar that was about to turn. She passed away last spring but I still think of her every time I stare at a bunch of random leftovers and figure out how to glue them together. Anyone else have an old timer show you a trick that just stuck?

My buddy Dave had this same thing happen with his grandma and her lasagna recipe. She never once showed him how to make it, just told him to "watch and learn" while she moved too fast to catch anything. He burned three pans trying to figure out the sauce timing, and his kitchen smelled like burnt garlic for a week. His grandma would just laugh from the couch, saying "you'll get it eventually" while he scraped charred cheese off the bottom. Funny thing is, now he makes it better than she does, but he still got no secret trick from her. Just years of trial and error, plus some very patient smoke alarms.
